Application: Budget light weight tarpon and cobia spinning reel.
I’ve used Shimano prouducts for years, and for the most part have been satisfied. Within the past year I began phasing out some older reels, and bringing in the Saragosa series. I couldn’t be happier.
With a lightweight but sold build design, super smooth action, and adequate drag this reel has taken many large fish for me already. Line capacity can be a issue for very large fish, but most of time, I’m able to give chase with the boat.
Pairing the reel: I like to pair these reels with a 7′ – 7′ 6″, fast action, heavy action spinning rod. I tend to spool up with braid from 40 – 65lb test. These reels pack a very smooth drag, but it is limited in to factory specs of 27lbs. I still find this adequate for all of my fishing, as it is usually in open areas to play the fish in.
Putting it to the test: So far this reel has bested smoker kingfish to 40lbs, big amberjack, cobia to 40lbs and tarpon in the mid hundreds. It’s still just as smooth as the day it came out of the box. I couldn’t be happier.
Bottom Line: If looking for a reel under $300, that will hold up to the rigors of big fish, yet remain smooth and lightweight, I can honesty say this reel will fit the bill. To top it off, Shimano’s customer service is top notch too!
