The Hogy 7' pocket surf rod echoes the surf rod designs of the 1970s and 80s, which were built to cast thick monofilament lines over great distances using fewer, forward-placed guides on a heavy fiberglass blank. Although modern advancements have moved us away from casting mono on glass, this rod retains the ability to launch a wide range of lure styles and weights to impressive distances. I particularly enjoy using this rod for "barefoot" beach fishing, and it proves exceptional as an albie rod on the boat, where casting distance is more crucial
than pinpoint accuracy. This is why we've equipped a surf rod with a gimbal butt. This rod is a delightful little pocket rocket, and I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do.

Moderate Fast Action: This action, which means the rod bends more towards the middle rather than just at the tip, allows for a greater level of flexibility compared to fast action rods. It provides a good balance between casting distance and sensitivity. The moderate fast action is beneficial for:

  • Absorbing Shock: This type of action helps in absorbing the shock during the fight with the fish, reducing the risk of line breaks and pulled hooks, especially when using lighter lines.
  • Versatility: The ability to launch a wide range of lure styles and weights makes this rod highly adaptable to various fishing conditions. This versatility is key when targeting different species, as it allows you to switch tactics without needing to change your gear.
  • Fewer Guides with Forward Placement: The design, influenced by older rods optimized for heavy mono, now benefits from advancements in materials and engineering, allowing for impressive casting distances even with lighter, more manageable modern lines.
  • Reduced Weight and Enhanced Sensitivity: Fewer guides contribute to reducing the overall weight of the rod, which can enhance its sensitivity.
  • Improved Casting Performance: With guides concentrated towards the front half, there is a smoother transition of the line from the reel through the rod, which can enhance casting performance, particularly in terms of accuracy and distance.

Faster Loading On Casting: Weight forward guides quickly load the rod with minimal effort. Allows for casting lures that are lighter than you would expect for the power of the blank.

Both Shore and Boat: The ability to use this rod effectively from both the shore and a boat adds a level of practicality that minimalist anglers like me appreciate. Whether you're wading on a beach or casting from a deck, this rod meets the needs of so many different scenarios.

Nostalgic Yet Modern: By drawing on the design elements of vintage surf rods, this rod not only offers a nod to the past but also delivers the performance expected by today’s anglers.
